Short answer

An Instagram Reels cover presents the video's content on a small screen, as a visual headline that tells viewers what it is at a glance. A good cover is not just an aesthetic poster; it selects the correct image of the product or venue, explains the video's purpose in a few words, and keeps the brand's color and typography system intact. NEFES consistently produces post and Reels visual language for restaurants, cafés, hair salons and boutique hotels from the real photo source.

This guide focuses on making the Reels cover readable and setting accurate expectations before viewers open the video. For movement and shot planning within the video, see the Reels shooting guide.

The three main elements on the cover

First element: Real subject image. In a hamburger video, a genuinely filmed burger; in a boutique hotel, the correct room type; at a hair salon, a real service detail with permission.

Second element: Short headline. A clear phrase that tells viewers what they will see, such as “Our new menu”, “Room tour” or “In the display today”. Headlines unrelated to the topic, such as “you won't believe”, can create false expectations.

Third element: Brand mark. A simple, properly licensed version of the logo that is readable at small size; not an oversized logo covering the entire cover.

8-point professional cover audit

CheckAsk yourselfIncorrect example
1. Real photoIs this product, room or venue really here?Stock image with a different business
2. Single subjectWhat is the video about?Writing fifteen messages on a single cover
3. Short textCan it be read in a few seconds on a small screen?Long paragraph
4. ContrastDoes the text stand out from the photo?Light text on a light background
5. Edge safetyDo words disappear when the platform crops the image?Critical headline left at the edge
6. LogoIs the real brand correct and proportionate?Wrong branch logo
7. Series consistencyDo the covers of the same brand relate to each other?Random font in every post
8. Final linkDo the cover topic and video description match?Headline says one thing, video another.

Platforms, devices and profile grids may show different crops. For that reason, instead of inventing a fixed “guaranteed safe pixel area on all screens” figure every year, check the actual preview in your production tool.

Four cover templates by industry

Restaurant: The product's real key frame; a two- to three-word menu headline; a small brand mark. The product's portion or contents are not altered.

Café: A real cup or display case, with readable “In the display today” text. Do not present a product that is not available that day as if it were new.

Hair salon: A permitted hairstyle photo and the real service name. Do not use before/after effects that artificially enlarge the result, or someone else's photo.

Boutique hotel: A real room photo, the correct room category and the short phrase “Room tour”. Do not create a wrong view or an illusion of a larger room.

Use these templates to apply the same design system to each business's own real assets. Changing the headline does not make an unrelated photo suitable for another business.

How do you test a cover in three places?

1. Design workspace: Check where the product or the person's face sits in the source image and whether the text obstructs it.

2. Small screen preview: Hold the phone at normal viewing distance and check whether the headline and main object are still recognizable.

3. Series view on the profile: Are three Reels covers placed side by side consistent for the business's brand? One cover being dark while another is highly colorful can sometimes be deliberate, but it should not look random.

Because platform interfaces can change, also check how the video looks on the real account after publishing. If the visible crop is different, you may need to rearrange the cover file.

About alt text and accessibility

It is useful to present the short title from the cover clearly in the video description as well. A designer who only places small, low-contrast text over the photo does not make the video's topic clear to everyone.

If the video may need audio information, subtitles or a description, accessibility is assessed separately based on the content type. A cover alone does not make the entire video accessible.

How does NEFES maintain the cover standard?

NEFES matches the business's logo, colors, typeface, real photos and content topic in brand memory. When the Reels shooting assignment is different, the title and main visual on the cover change accordingly.

Final check before publishing: Does the cover show the real product? Is the title readable at small size? Is critical information lost in platform cropping? Are the brand and branch names correct? Is the actual video content consistent with the promise on the cover?

START IMPLEMENTING

Adapt this guide to your business

View the cover at phone screen size. If the main product and short title can still be picked out in the profile grid, you are on the right track. Do not place necessary information only in the corners.
